Press Release – Stencil Media team up with Clipcanvas

Stencil Media are proud to announce that we have teamed up with Clipcanvas who will now be handling all of our Stock Footage Sales.

Clipcanvas offers professional users a marketplace for stock footage by utilising their unique search and distribution platform for stock video, footage and animations. They are based in Norway, with a secondary office in New York, and offer their technology to professional videographers and producers that wish to market and sell their stock video content.

Clipcanvas also offer professionals that wish to purchase stock video the opportunity to efficiently search for, identify and download ready-to-use footage in the most relevant formats available today.

Stencil Media will initially be offering animated backgrounds which will be ideal for video blogs, news updates and vodcasts. If you own a green screen then these backdrops will be just what the doctor ordered to add a high production value to your project! Further down the line Stencil Media will be offering a whole range of live action stock footage for use in your short films, documentaries and features.

Scott Edington, founder of Stencil Media explains that “We’ve dealt with several stock footage market places over the years but none of them have met the high standards we required for Stencil Media Stock Footage. Here at Stencil Media we’re all about high quality products combined with outstanding servcie and that’s why we’re happy to team up with Clipcanvas. With around 100,000 clips to choose from we’re confident that Clipcanvas will be able to satisfy all our customers’ needs.”

Scott goes on to tell us that “One of the many aspects that we loved about their service is that you are free to download a watermarked version of any of their available clips to see if it fits your needs before buying. This means that you can create mock-ups for clients without having to shell out any money up front! Which is always nice!”

Cato from Clipcanvas says that “We’re really happy to be able to help Stencil Media with all their stock footage sales. We specialise in helping professional individuals and organisations through our unique distribution platform, so we’re looking forward to working with them.”

How to Make Money Selling Stock Footage!

What’s it all about?

Stock footage is video footage that is available to buy and use in your film or video under licence. You sign up to a website that will post your footage and every time somebody buys one of these licences you get a commission from the website.

If you’ve never sold stock footage before then here’s how it works. You sign up to the site and register to sell your work. Sometimes you will have to do a test to show your understanding of the process, sometimes you’ll have to submit some of your work first to get approved as a seller. Either way, once that’s out of the way you’re ready to start uploading your files.

Once uploaded your files will be reviewed and if acceptable will be posted for sale on the marketplace. If somebody buys that clip then you earn commission at usually between 40 and 60%. Sure, that’s a hefty cut, but they take care of everything for you so you don’t have to deal with all the admin, file sharing, promotion and sales transaction side of things which saves a lot of hassle. Each site is different in that some will let you set your own price and some will set the price for you. It’s best to take a look at similar files to get an idea of how much to charge.

Your earnings will usually be sent to you once a month via Paypal, Moneybookers or sometimes as a cheque.

Why do people buy stock footage and what to sell?

More often that not, people use stock footage to save time and money. It’s usually a lot cheaper just to buy a shot of a busy restaurant exterior for example, than send a whole crew out to film one. The next time you see some TV show where there’s a shot of New York or some city from the air… they probably used stock footage!

But what to sell? Well you’ll be surprised what some people will buy and if you can think of it then somebody will probably want it at some point. I saw someone I follow on Twitter who was amazed and also confused that somebody had bought his clip of a zombie in a business suit stood in front of a green-screen and reading the paper. You might just have some old footage lying around that could be earning you money right now!

That’s not to say that you’ll get a queue of people lining up to buy some footage of your cat sleeping or your dog chasing his tail. Think about what potential buyers might be looking for and try to provide it. Some stock websites show clips by amount of sales, so you can see what’s hot and what’s not.  Try and be innovative though and anticipate what the marketplace wants. There’s probably a million clips of business people shaking hands out there so sticking your mate Dave in a suit and shaking hands won’t cut the mustard… try to think about ways to stand out from the crowd!

But remember, as you’re selling a licence to use the footage and not the actual footage itself, you can sell the licences over and over again… and a lot of sellers often do! This means you might be getting residual income for months, if not years to come!

Who to use?

It all depends on which site works best for you. Some are more popular so will likely result in more sales but potentially less commission, some offer more commission but aren’t as popular and some offer exclusive or non-exclusive terms. There’s plenty out there to choose form so make sure you check out their FAQ pages before deciding. My preferred sites are Pond5, Video Hive, Revostock and Clip Canvas.

Here at Stencil Media we’re soon to be offering HD Animated Backgrounds so we’re keeping our eyes out for a high quality distribution platform. Clip Canvas are our favourite so far out of the stock footage marketplaces so if you want my opinion then you should definitely check them out.

You’ll find a bunch of links to these sites in the bar to the right ———->

And that’s about it really, so get out there, create some great footage and watch the money roll in!
